The University of Alabama has inducted a new group of students into its chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Founded on Dec. 5, 1776, The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation's most prestigious academic honor society. It has chapters at 286 colleges and universities in the United States, 50 alumni associations, and more than half a million members worldwide. Noteworthy members include 17 U.S. presidents, 39 justices of the Supreme Court of the United States and more than 130 Nobel laureates. The mission of The Phi Beta Kappa Society is to champion education in the liberal arts and sciences, foster freedom of thought, and recognize academic excellence. UA's chapter was founded in 1851. Students are elected to membership on the basis of outstanding academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences.

Shanila Kabir, a senior political science major at Georgia State University, served as an intern at the state capitol during the 2019 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

The Mary M. MacKinnon Endowed Scholarship in Gerontology is a scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate great passion for hands-on work with the aging community. Students must be in good standing and have a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher to be considered for the award. This fund was created by family and friends to honor Mary M. MacKinnon, one of the founders of the graduate studies program in Gerontology at Georgia State University.

Eric Edmonson, a junior political science major at Georgia State University, served as an intern at the state capitol during the 2019 session of the Georgia General Assembly. Edmonson, of Buford, GA, felt that the Georgia Legislative Internship Program (GLIP) "was a unique opportunity that very few get to participate in." Eric hoped that GLIP "would make him stand out from his peers" and give him a greater chance at achieving greatness in future career plans. After graduation, Eric plans to attend law school and eventually become an attorney and business owner. He is inspired by the quote "success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it," by Henry David Thoreau. His favorite book is "Memoirs of the Second World War," by Winston Churchill

Nearly 130 University of North Georgia (UNG) students performed research-based projects and presented their results during the poster sessions March 22 at the 24th Annual Research Conference (ARC) in the Convocation Center on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. Other students participated in panel discussions on topics such as educational experiences and musical research.

Georgia Southern University recently recognized approximately 3,300 students for excellence in academics on the Fall 2018 Dean's List. To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.

Five University of North Georgia students pursuing degrees in the College of Science and Mathematics won highly competitive research internships to work at renowned programs and facilities for the upcoming summer. The students included three physics majors, one biology major, and one chemistry major.

Troy University is pleased to announce students who have been named to the Chancellor's List for the Fall Semester and Term 2 of the 2018/2019 academic year. Full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who earn a grade point average of 4.0 qualify for the Chancellor's List. The Fall Semester includes students at the Troy, Ala., campus. Term 2 includes students at TROY's campuses in Dothan, Phenix City and Montgomery, Ala., along with locations outside of Alabama and online.

Vocal and instrumental ensembles and several faculty members from the University of North Georgia (UNG) joined forces to present the university's inaugural holiday concert featuring the sounds of Christmas in Gainesville, Georgia.

Dr. Jo Qian gave about 100 students an opportunity to share what they have learned about human diseases and innovative biotechniques that impact the health field. The inaugural University of North Georgia (UNG) Public Health Awareness Day was held. Nov. 7 on UNG's Gainesville Campus. Topics of poster presentations included a variety of skin, bone, muscle and nervous system disorders.

The following people recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Selected as one of 35 students in the first cohort of the Coca-Cola First Generation and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Scholars program, which commences during the fall semester.

More than 250 college students, faculty and staff members from across the Southeast participated in the Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference Nov. 3 at the University of North Georgia's (UNG) Gainesville Campus. This was the first time UNG hosted the regional conference.
